Quantitative assessments of mirror movements as biomarkers of corticospinal tract integrity in humans
The goal of this study is to determine the feasibility and relevance of measuring involuntary mirror movements — unintended movements on one side of the body during voluntary movement of the other — as an indicator of corticospinal tract integrity in humans. Combining kinematic and electrophysiological measurements allows investigation of motor system organization. These assessments may serve as biomarkers for atypical motor development in children or motor deficits in adults following neurological injury, and inform practical considerations for their use in research and clinical settings.
